Panama’s President Ricardo Martinelli has announced plans to build the world’s tallest statue of the Virgin Mary.

The statue of Santa Maria la Antigua will rise over Panama City to a height of 328 feet. The statue will be unveiled next year, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the date when Panama City was established as the first mainland diocese in Latin America. (The dioceses of San Juan, Puerto Rico; and Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic are older, having been established in 1511.)
